MUSIC

Happy Xmas (War Is Over) — Barry Frame & People of Denny

Official Charts

A community recording project conceived and produced by Barry during the COVID restrictions in 2020.

Barry came up with the idea of creating a Christmas charity single entirely from musicians and singers from his hometown of Denny. Local musicians, singers, schools and businesses became involved, with Strathcarron Hospice selected as the beneficiary through a community vote.

COVID restrictions required an unusual recording process. Alongside sessions in Barry's home studio, he created a mobile recording setup in his car, allowing contributors to be recorded outdoors and through windows while adhering to the restrictions in place at the time. Other musicians recorded remotely following Barry's instructions and submitted their recordings for inclusion in the master session.

No pre-existing backing track was used. Every musical element was recorded specifically for the project, including drums, bass, 12 guitars, bagpipes and 35 vocalists.

Barry created and coordinated the project and worked as producer, recording engineer and mixing engineer, as well as helping to film contributors. Jamie Taylor assisted with production, recording and filming, with Simon Jake Gillespie assisting with the video edit.

Released in December 2020, the single reached No. 18 on the UK iTunes chart and No. 82 on the Official UK Singles Sales Chart. The project also received radio coverage including interviews with Central FM and Go Radio.

Barry Frame - If I Were Gone

An original song written during Barry's college years around 2011–2012.

Barry wrote the music and melody, with Adair Murray contributing to the lyrics. The recording features Kim Shepherd on vocals and Andy Alston of Del Amitri on piano.

Barry produced and recorded the track, with Colin McGeoch of Le Chunky Studio — one of Barry's lecturers at the time — assisting with the mix.

Music for Picture — Original Score Portfolio

Created during Barry's MDes studies at Glasgow School of Art in 2014, this project explores different approaches to composing music for moving image.

The collection contains four contrasting pieces:

Science Police — Original music and sound design for a fast-moving Scottish television/documentary-style opening.

No Country for Old Men — An experiment in adding a sparse slide-guitar score to a film renowned for its restrained use of conventional music.

Forrest Gump — An original score for the opening sequence. Barry composed, recorded and performed the instrumentation.

Experimental Film / TED Talk — An experimental combination of spoken material and original music.

Barry's roles: Producer / Recording Engineer / Guitarist / String Arranger / Programmer

05

MUSIC

Galway Shoal — Liam McGrandles

One of Barry's favourite tracks from an album he recorded and produced for Liam McGrandles during the COVID period.

Alongside the wider recording and production, Barry developed the guitar parts and composed and arranged the string parts, creating them with virtual instruments within Pro Tools.

The project demonstrates Barry's work as a recording engineer, producer, musician and arranger.

Barry's roles: Producer / Recording Engineer

MUSIC

The Ghost — Scott Ashworth

Ghosts and Broken Men is an album by Scott Ashworth that I had the pleasure of recording and producing. This remains one of my favourite tracks from the project, featuring Scott on lead and backing vocals, acoustic guitar and piano, Steven Hicken Jr on pedal steel guitar, Iain Donald on bass and Dave Cantwell on drums.

The accompanying video was filmed by Simon Gillespie of Cinematique Films and features Scott Ashworth, Tracey Ashworth and me.

Barry's roles: Producer / Recording Engineer

Sleeper train

Sleeper Train — 3 Track EP

An original band project from around 2010.

Sleeper Train featured Colin James Murphy on vocals, Barry Frame on lead guitar, Jamie Patterson on bass and Johnny Ruff on drums.

The songs were written by Colin James Murphy, with Barry creating and performing the guitar parts heard throughout the EP.

The release consists of If the Angels Were True, Yellow City and Let's Get Free, with Let's Get Free remaining one of Barry's personal favourites.

Fiona Simpson filmed and edited the video for If the Angels Were True.

The EP is also available through major streaming platforms.

Barry's roles: Lead Guitarist / Guitar Arrangement

MUSIC

Celtic in My DNA — Liam McGrandles

A charity single written by Liam McGrandles and produced and recorded by Barry.

Barry handled the production and recording and performed drums, guitar, bass and mandolin, as well as creating additional crowd and stadium-style sound design.

Barry had never previously played mandolin. He used his existing understanding of guitar, intervals and fretboard logic to work out the instrument and record the required parts.

06

Barry's roles: Producer / Recording Engineer / Multi-Instrumentalist / Sound Designer / Mixer

MUSIC

5 AM — Katy B Remix

Created during Barry's Commercial Sound Production degree at the University of the West of Scotland.

Rather than simply reproducing the original Katy B recording, Barry substantially changed the arrangement and harmonic character.

Using diatonic chord substitution and reharmonisation, Barry changed the harmony beneath the existing melody while retaining its relationship to the original song.

The project demonstrates the practical use of music theory as a creative production tool.

Barry's roles: Producer / Arranger / Mixing Engineer

MUSIC

Mr. V — Laura Begley & Barry Frame

An original song written by Laura Begley and subsequently re-recorded and produced with Barry.

Barry developed the recording, adding guitar and a new guitar solo while handling the production, recording and mix.

The finished recording was subsequently used in the feature film The Last Love Letter.

Barry's roles: Producer / Recording Engineer / Mixing Engineer / Guitarist

MUSIC

I Won't Let You Get Me Down

An original song written, arranged, recorded and produced by Barry and released in 2024.

Influenced by the energy of late-1990s and early-2000s pop-punk, Barry performed the instrumentation and built the complete production.

The lead vocal was commissioned specifically for the project, with Ian Faircloth of Forth Valley College mixing the finished track.

The song is available through major streaming platforms.

Barry's roles: Songwriter / Composer / Arranger / Producer / Multi-Instrumentalist

MUSIC

Jealous Guy — John Lennon Cover

A multi-instrument studio interpretation of John Lennon's Jealous Guy.

Barry recorded and produced the complete arrangement, performing the vocals, guitars, bass and piano, programming the drums and adding his own guitar solo.

The piano was constructed creatively in separate right- and left-hand recording passes before being combined into the finished production.

Barry's roles: Vocals / Guitar / Bass / Piano / Drum Programming / Producer / Recording Engineer / Mixing

MUSIC

Sk8er Boi — Laura Begley & Barry Frame

A darker reinterpretation of Avril Lavigne's Sk8er Boi, featuring Laura Begley on vocals and Barry Frame on guitar.

Rather than recreating the original pop-punk arrangement, Barry used diatonic chord substitutions and reharmonisation to retain the recognisable melody while substantially changing the harmonic character beneath it.

12

Barry's roles: Guitarist / Arranger / Reharmonisation / Production

13

MUSIC

Vincent — Fingerstyle Guitar

A solo performance of Don McLean's Vincent in a Chet Atkins-influenced fingerstyle guitar approach.

It remains one of Barry's favourite pieces to perform and is a piece he has continued to revisit throughout his career.

Barry also performed Vincent when winning a musicians' competition in Falkirk.

The video was filmed by Barry's son, Zach.

Barry's roles: Guitarist / Performer
